With the exception of a few hundred units which were sold to bike shops in the mid 1990’s, Wike has remained a direct to customer brand. Here is a bit of a history of how our company evolved over the last dozen years.
Our first Wike weighed in at 15 lbs and had a unique and subsequently patented flip-over tow-bar which doubled as a handlebar.
First “Wike Sales Event” at Guelph Farmers Market. We sold almost all of the 17 trailers pulled with a bicycle to the Guelph Farmers Market.
Because of the unique towing feature which could convert the trailer instantly into a push cart we filed for some patents but that didn’t stop a really big company from making thousands of illegal copies of our product and selling them to a big mass merchant. We filed suit for patent infringement against the mass merchant and the really big company and won.
With the cash settlement from the patent infringement suit we built our first electric car…...
We developed a new folding frame which allowed the trailer to fold flat and shorten at the same time. We filed for another patent and expanded into the garage.
Then we moved into a 200 sq. ft. industrial unit on Regal Road in Guelph and started making the Wike Moonlite. The internet brought people from around the world to our web site and eventually (2002) the world’s largest cycling publication “ Bicycling Magazine” reviewed all the leading trailers and ranked us equal to the industry leader, “Burley”. We were very busy making more Wike Trailers.
We improved our Wike and filed more Worldwide patents to make our Wike the best. Our Stainless Towbar could now be re-positioned under the trailer to hold the jogging wheel
Wike is the “roomiest, most aerodynamic, fastest to fold and assemble, easiest to convert, lightest and most stable”. Adventure Cycling Magazine reviewed our Wike along with 9 other trailers and agreed with us. They also said that it was probably the best value.
